Singapore Tai Chi Chuan

Pressure Training 2

We had a look at the videos shot of the training after breakfast. When we came to one part at 0:33 in the video below I said it first – it looks fake – and we had a good laugh.

In the video below the point is if you managed to keep a good structure and connect with your partner at the moment his structure is misaligned he will be sent back with minimal movement on your part; in fact so minimal that it looks like a fake demo.

However, just because you barely moved externally does not mean that your mind did not move.In fact, if you cannot do this if you lack strong awareness and intention. You can think of this as a test of your ability to focus.

From a Zen perspective you can ask whether you pushed your partner out or he pushed himself away. Hint – its an application of Newton’s 3rd Law of Motion.

In the rest of the videos I demonstrated the idea of enter and connect quickly to remind my student of keeping his guard up at all times otherwise he could be caught flatfooted by a fast moving opponent.
